There are now 124 Croats among the Righteous Among the Nations.
Antun and Gabrijela Golubić were awarded because they took in their care Chaim Yaakov Mozes, a Jewish boy, after his parents were taken to concentration camps, thereby saving his life, it was said at today's ceremony.
The mayor said this was a great honour for Ludbreg, a town in northern Croatia.
Israeli Ambassador Ilan Mor attended the ceremony, saying that today Israel remembers the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust.
It is very symbolic that we are in Ludbreg today to honour a non-Jewish family who risked their lives to save one Jewish boy who, thanks to them, is alive, he said, adding that this award can represent a small step for Croatia in dealing with its past.
The award was accepted by an heir of the Golubić family, Vlado Herceg, who said his relatives took Yaakov in as their own child.
"Their son was killed by a leftover mine, so they hoped that the boy would stay with them, they could feed him, but the situation was such that his cousins came for him and took him to Israel, where he still lives," he said.
Also present at the ceremony were former president Stjepan Mesić, President Zoran Milanović's advisor on human rights and civil society Melita Mulić, and Međimurje County head Matija Posavec.
