85% of innovations in Croatia come from "garage"

Author: Snježana Pezer

ZAGREB, 10 Nov (Hina) - Croatia's innovation system is based in 85% of cases on inventions from "the garage" while in the world more than 85% of innovations come from R&D institutions at the level of the academic community, the president of the Association of Croatian Innovators, Miljenko Šimpraga, said on Wednesday.

Opening a symposium called "Innovation - A Guarantee of Future Development," Šimpraga said that the policy of intellectual proprietorship is a document that should serve as the basis for the preparation of rules that would clearly stimulate academic entrepreneurship and reward authors whose innovations are ready to be commercialised and applied to the economy. That would enable commercial entities to significantly increase their market competitiveness and profit.

He said that there is no need to fear artificial intelligence and machine learning because they can significantly advance development processes, and Croatia has potential in that regard, which can be seen in the contribution by teams from the Faculty of Machine Engineering and the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Computing.

The symposium was held as part of the "Nikola Tesla Entrepreneurial Centre" project, which was launched on 1 March this year and ends on 31 December 2023.

The project leader, Monika Cegur, said that the project is valued at just over HRK 32 million, of which HRK 23.176 million is a grant from the European Regional Development Fund as part of the  International Telecommunication Union (ITU) mechanism.
