Vukovar Hospital absorbs €6.1 million from European funds

Author: Snježana Pezer

ZAGREB, 27 Oct (Hina) - Vukovar National Memorial Hospital Day was marked on Wednesday, and the hospital's assistant director Zoran Aleksijević recalled that the hospital has absorbed €6.1 million from European funds, with €2.6 million for projects for the day hospital, day case surgery and physical medicine.

"With this investment, we have obtained high-quality equipment to achieve everything we always wanted to, for patients to come, be diagnosed and receive therapy and be able to go home the same day," Aleksijević said and added that the number of acute beds in the Vukovar Hospital has been reduced from 500 to 400, which he considers a great success.

The Vukovar Hospital was opened on 27 October 1857 thanks to its founder Victor Spitzer. During the 1991-1995 Homeland War, it played a key role in the city's defence. In the three months of siege, about 4,000 wounded people were treated in the hospital and about 2,250 operations were performed in extremely difficult conditions.

During that time, between 70 and 80 mortar shells fell on the hospital a day and there were some days when up to 700 projectiles fell on the hospital.

Addressing those present, Health Minister Vili Beroš said that new projects were being prepared for day hospitals and day case surgery.

"I am even happier that adjusting activities is being considered as part of the necessary changes to the health system. Today we heard that psychogeriatric and mental health is important and that is the direction that I would certainly recommend for this hospital to follow," said Beroš.
