22nd Terry Fox Run charity to raise funds for children cancer patients

Author: Vojo Micak

ZAGREB, 16 Sept (Hina) - The 22nd edition of the Terry Fox Run charity event will take place in Croatia on Saturday, 18 September, and this year the funds raised will go to the Department of Oncology and Haematology at the Children's Hospital in Zagreb, the organisers announced on Thursday.

For the second year in a row the event will be held online because of the coronavirus pandemic. The funds raised will be used for research of complications after the treatment of the youngest oncological patients.

Recent statistics show that about 80 percent of children succeed in recovering from malignant tumours and that three in five who recover have subsequent complications from the treatment.

The event will start with the traditional sale of T-shirts in Bogovićeva Street in central Zagreb. The organisers called on people to join the campaign online.

The race, known as the Marathon of Hope, is organised by the Canadian Embassy and the Croatian Cancer League and co-organised by the City of Zagreb under the auspices of the Ministry of Health and the Andrija Štampar Teaching Institute for Public Health.

Canadian Ambassador Alan Bowman said he was thrilled to see how many Croatian citizens had participated in the event last year, expressing hope that Terry's spirit and courage would inspire people to join the Terry Fox movement this year as well.

Terry Fox is a Canadian national hero who started a marathon that today takes place in over 60 countries, with millions of people running in honour of his passion for running and his desire to beat cancer. Fox lost a leg to cancer and in 1980, in order to raise money for treatment, he embarked on a run across Canada which he called the Marathon of Hope. He ran 143 days, covering 42 km a day, but failed to finish the run because the disease came back, claiming his life at 22.
