Zagreb Airport receives ACI-ACA certificate

Author: Lana Lončarić

ZAGREB, 15 Aug (Hina) - The International Zagreb Airport (MZLZ) HAS received a certificate from the Airport Council International (ACI) confirming Level 3 of carbon management and emissions reduction in daily airport activities, the MZLZ company said earlier this week.

According to a press release, Zagreb's Franjo Tuđman Airport is the first airport in Croatia to reach Level 3 of Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA), which is the result of an extensive programme of various activities for carbon emission reduction in recent years.

Thanks to energy management activities introduced in recent years, carbon emissions at the airport dropped by 4% between 2017 and 2019 despite a significant increase in the number of passengers in that period, the MZLZ said.

It stressed that future plans also included the construction of a photovoltaic power station that would enable the direct conversion of solar energy into electricity.

"The International Zagreb Airport is dedicated to implementing business solutions that aim to reduce negative environmental impacts. Achieving Level 3 according to the ACI-ACA classification is an extremely important step in these efforts. Our goal and commitment in the airport's business activities is to achieve zero CO2 emissions by 2050 and we will be persistent on that path," said the president of the MZLZ Management Board, Huseyin Bahadir Bedir.

The press release also states that according to the classification of the ACI-ACA global programme, Level 3 is called "Optimisation" and presents a significant step towards the fulfillment of Zagreb Airport's commitment to achieving zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

The programme independently assesses and recognises the efforts of airports to manage and reduce their carbon emissions based on submitted data.
