Croatian Network for Homeless wins prestigious European award

Author: Snježana Pezer

ZAGREB, 15 February (Hina) - The Croatian Network for the Homeless (HMB) is one of the laureates of this year's Civil Society Prize awarded by the European Economic Social Committee (EESC) for it exceptional contribution in the fight against coronavirus and its devastating earthquakes, EESC said on Monday.

HMB's project "Support to the homeless and coronavirus" was proclaimed as the best project among 23 projects from the EU and UK for their outstanding contribution to fighting COVID-19 and its disastrous consequences.

HMB organised the project between March and the end of May when many soup kitchens were not accessible to the homeless because of the lockdown and no public transport was available. The network secured thousands of donations and food packages for the homeless in several Croatian cities and estimates that it helped over 700 homeless during that period.

"We are touched and proud to have been awarded this valuable award which recognises us, our members, donors, employees and volunteers who unselfishly help our beneficiaries even though they too are often in a difficult situation," the network's spokeswoman Sanja Blažeković said.

The €10,000 prize was awarded online today by EESC's vice-president for communication, Cillian Lohan.

23 projects from the EU and the UK in all received the award for their outstanding contribution to fighting COVID-19 and its disastrous consequences, the EESC reported on its web site.
