Croatia's Pavic and Brazil's Soares win U.S. Open men's doubles title

Author: Marija Šestan

ZAGREB, Sept 11 (Hina) - Croatia's Mate Pavic and Brazil's Bruno Soares claimed the U.S. Open men's doubles title on Thursday when they defeated with a 7-5 6-3 eighth seeds Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands and Nikola Mektic of Croatia.

It was the second men's doubles Grand Slam title in the career of this 27-year old Croatian tennis player. In 2018, he and Austrian Oliver Marach won the Australian Open men's doubles tournament.

On 21 May 2018, Pavić became the No. 1 ranked player in the world in doubles, and spend 8 weeks at the top. He was the youngest No. 1 doubles player in the world since Todd Woodbridge in 1996.

In mixed doubles, he won the US Open in 2016 and on that occasion he teamed with Germany's Laura Siegemund, and two years later he and Canada's Gabriela Dabrowski won the Australian Open.

For the 31-year-old Mektic this was the first time that he reached the final match in men's doubles in a grand slam tournament.
