European Commission grants farmers additional aid

Author: Lana Lončarić

ZAGREB, April 17 (Hina) - The European Commission introduced a possibility of disbursing advances of up to 70% for direct payments and up to 85% for rural development payments, in order to assist farmers facing troubles due to the COVID-19 containment measures., the Croatian Agriculture Ministry said on Friday.

The advances will be paid out after administrative controls have been completed, but before on-the-spot checks, which have been reduced due to movement restrictions making their implementation more difficult.

These novelties, it was said, are in line with the Agriculture Ministry's proposals sent to the European Commission on March 16, as well as with the joint proposal by member states, which Croatia, as the country holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, prepared for the European Commission following the videoconference of agriculture ministers on March 25.

It was underscored that the European Commission had adopted a package of measures to assist the fisheries and aquaculture sector, including assistance for the temporary cessation of fishing activities and the grant of compensation to freshwater, marine fish and shellfish farmers for the temporary cessation or reduction of production.

"We expect that in the coming period the European Commission will take additional steps to help producers in line with the requests by Croatia and other member states of the European Union, in order to maintain and encourage agricultural production and prevent disruptions in food supply," the Agriculture Ministry said.
