Horvat discusses measures against COVID-19 with EU counterparts

Author: Snježana Pezer

ZAGREB, March 20 (Hina) - Croatia's presidency of the EU in Zagreb on Friday organised an informal video conference of EU ministers responsible for competition to discuss measures at the national and  European levels to contain the consequences of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Minister of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Crafts Darko Horvat convened the video conference following a formal meeting of the Competitiveness Council (COMPET) in Brussels on February 27, the Economy Ministry said in a press release.

"It is important that in this situation the European Commission and member states regularly exchange all relevant information and coordinate measures at the European and national levels in order to facilitate the fight against the spread of COVID-19 and in that way limit the negative impact on the EU economy," Horvat concluded.

The focus of the video conference was the effectiveness of the single market under the pressure of external factors.

"It was concluded that any further fragmentation of the single market would further complicate the free movement of goods and disrupt the supply chains," the press release said.

The member states also exchanged views on ways of ensuring sufficient levels of production capacity to meet the needs of all member states.

"In these difficult circumstances, it is particularly important to find common answers in order to provide businesses, as soon as possible, with the right tools in response to the current situation," Horvat said.

The ministers also discussed the measures adopted in the member states and their compatibility with the initiatives agreed at the EU level, concluding that it was necessary as soon as possible to define support activities for the recovery of the EU's economies in the future.
