International Childhood Cancer Day marked in Zagreb

Author: Roberta Mlinarić

ZAGREB, Feb 15 (Hina) - "Love at work", an association of parents whose children suffer from malignant diseases, marked International Childhood Cancer Day in downtown Zagreb on Saturday.

Attending the event was also Health Minister Vili Beros, who expressed satisfaction that the implementation of a national plan to combat cancer would begin soon.

An action plan is to be drawn up specifying measures to be implemented to improve care for cancer patients, he said.

Beros said that the government was committed to building a national hospital for children's diseases, where children suffering from cancer would be treated as well.

He said that a tender for the feasibility study was underway and that it would take a year to make the feasibility study for the project.

After that, we will apply for EU funding, he said, adding that the government was also looking for other possible sources of financing for the project.

The head of the "Love at work" association, Ljiljana Vuletic, whose daughter suffers from cancer, said one of the association's activities was raising donations for parents whose children undergo treatment in Zagreb and who come from other parts of Croatia.

The head of the pediatric intensive care unit at the KBC Zagreb hospital, Milivoj Novak, said that the results of childhood cancer treatment in Croatia were comparable with those in other EU countries, with Croatia being in the middle of the ranking.

A new pediatric oncology ward is being built as part of KBC Zagreb and it will cost around HRK 32 million and be opened this year, Novak said, adding that around 150 children were diagnosed with cancer in Croatia every year.
