MEP Sincic calls on Croatian MPs to support declaration on the status of the Croatian currency

Author: Snježana Pezer

ZAGREB, Jan 17 (Hina) - Fifteen members of the Croatian Parliament and some 40 members of the European Parliament have so far signed a declaration on the status of the Croatian kuna, initiated by the Human Shield party in a bid to stop the adoption of the euro in Croatia, the party's deputy leader and MEP Ivan Vilibor Sincic said on Friday.

Calling on Croatian lawmakers to support the declaration, Sincic explained that it was written by reputable experts and called for a sound public debate on the introduction of the euro.

Croatian MEPs Ruza Tomasic and Mislav Kolakusic have signed the declaration while the remaining eight refused to do so, Sincic told a press conference in the Parliament building.

Sincic warned that considering the current structure of the European Union, introducing the euro would eliminate Croatia's monetary and fiscal tools to come out of any crisis, whereas on the other hand the EU does not have any mechanism that could help any member state in case of an economic crisis.

"We are losing the exchange-rate policy and the policy of discount interest rates. That monetary policy will be determined by the council of governors in Frankfurt where, of course, we will be outvoted," claimed Sincic.

MP Bruna Esih, who supported the declaration, underscored that despite the differences between parties and MPs it was important to reach a consensus regarding the introduction of the euro as this is a national issue. She said that Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic does not have the legitimacy to introduce the euro because he did not present this as part of his election platform.

MP Goran Aleksic, who also signed the declaration, said that by signing the EU accession treaty we also agreed to join the eurozone however we are not obliged to do so immediately and can delay that as long as we like. The central bank governor and his associates are trying to convince the public that everything will be all right, which however is pure PR, Aleksic said.

Aleksic said that Croatian National Bank (HNB) Governor Boris Vujcic does not deserve to associate with other EU bank governors because he was to blame for the unfair CHF-indexed loans and unfair interest rates.

MP Ivan Lovrinovic underscored that apart from the flag, Constitution and national anthem, the currency is a sign of a country's sovereignty as well as being the most important instrument in correcting the imbalance in international economies.

All the surveys commissioned by the HNB show that the public is for the most part opposed to introducing the euro, Lovrinovic said, adding that Hungary and the Czech Republic have not adopted the euro despite meeting all the criteria for its introduction.
