The 23rd International Bat Night was organised by the Medvednica Nature Park and is being marked on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Veternica cave, where as many as 18 bat species have been found, including 12 that spend the winter there.
Bats are an important indicator of the state of the environment and a valuable part of biodiversity, the Medvednica Nature Park says.
The event is being observed at Zagreb's ZOO on Saturday as well.
International Bat Night started in 1997 under Agreement on the Conservation of Populations of European Bats the (EUROBATS). Croatia has been a signatory since 2000.
Croatia has 35 bat species and all are protected under the Nature Protection Act.
