Author: Marija Šestan

ZAGREB, June 26 (Hina) - The foundation set up to collect necessary funds for the construction of a new unit for treatment of children suffering from cancers at the Department of Pediatrics at the Zagreb University Hospital Centre on Wednesday held a function in Zagreb in a bid to secure the necessary 25 million kuna for its cause.

Currently, the division of hematology and oncology at the Department of Pediatrics has 27 beds for patients, and the construction of the new section on the roof of the hospital's building will provide more amenities for small patients, the head of the division, Dr. Ernest Bilic said the the dinner.

He said that annually 120-140 children are diagnosed with malignant diseases in Croatia, and the division of hematology and oncology at the Department of Pediatrics mostly tackles leukaemia and lymphoma.

The survival rate among children hit by acute lymphoblastic leukemia is 85% in Europe and in Croatia this percentage stands at 86%, which shows that Croatia is above the EU average, according to figures provided by Dr. Bilic.

The head of the foundation, Anamarija Zorovic, said that to date, 6.1 million kuna had been collected and during the first fundraising function in Karlovac in May, 1.2 million kuna was collected. She said that an additional 21 million needed to be collected.

In attendance at the fundraising event in Zagreb today was Health Minister Milan Kujundzic.
