"112 Awards" presented in Dubrovnik

Author: Vojo Micak

ZAGREB, April 11 (Hina) - The 112 Awards ceremony, organised by the European Emergency Number Association (EENA), took place in Dubrovnik on Wednesday, with awards going to participants in the rescue of 12 Thai boys and their football coach who had been trapped in a cave for more than two weeks in July 2018.

The awards were presented as part of EENA's regular annual conference, and the ceremony was held under the auspices of the Croatian Ministry of the Interior, the ministry said in a press release on Wednesday night.

The International Cooperation Award was presented to Ivan Karadzic, a member of the international rescue team from Denmark, who accepted the award on behalf of all divers involved in the rescue operation.

The Rescue Coordination Award went to the Royal Thai Navy SEALs for successful coordination of the operation.

Greeting those in attendance, Assistant Minister of the Interior Damir Trut said it was his honour to be able present the awards to "the brave people who risked their own lives to save others."

"The international aspect of providing assistance is proof that humaneness knows no bounds," he said, adding that the Thai rescue operation was "proof of a successful and professional coordination which resulted in a positive outcome."

Trut thanked EENA for choosing Croatia and Dubrovnik to mark its 20th anniversary, saying that Croatia was investing considerable effort in developing its civil protection system and promoting the 112 emergency number.

The annual conference brought together over 800 participants from 55 countries who discussed operational and technical issues, including adjustment to the new GDPR requirements, the potential of social networks for use by emergency services, the impact of climate change on the incidence of natural disasters, providing psychological assistance to operators at 112 call centres, and new technological solutions for emergency response.
