13th Festival of Tolerance - Jewish Film Festival Zagreb opens

Author: Hari Alfeo

ZAGREB, April 8 (Hina) - The 13th Festival of Tolerance - Jewish Film Festival Zagreb was opened at the Student Centre on Sunday night with a screening of Polish director Adrian Panek's "Werewolf" and a round of applause of gratitude to festival founder Branko Lustig.

"Werewolf" is about a group of children just liberated from a concentration camp who end up in an abandoned building where new horrors await them.

The most horrible thing is when children are victims of war, which is why we in Poland and you in Croatia should systematically raise these topics, Panek said at the screening.

The opening of the festival was attended by Israeli Ambassador Ilan Mor, envoys of the president and the culture minister, MPs, ambassadors, actors, directors, public figures and representatives of the City of Zagreb. The biggest applause was given to the festival's founder, two-times Oscar winner Lustig.

Mayor Milan Bandic opened the festival, saying it was a precious cultural event which raised awareness of the most important topics of modern society, i.e. respect for and celebration of diversity, equality, freedom, justice and brotherhood.

The Festival of Tolerance is a film festival with a clear mission and this year too its programme focuses on working on a better and more tolerant society, he added.

The festival is taking place until April 13 at the Student Centre, Kinoteka and Tuskanac cinemas, showing about 80 films and including five round tables, two exhibitions, two Masterclass lectures as well as debates and virtual reality projects for the youth.
