HGK vice president in charge of agriculture and tourism, Dragan Kovacevic, said Croatia annually produces 350,000 prosciuttos, which does not cover even half of the needs on the domestic market. At the same time, prosciutto export is growing which resulted in a surplus for processed meat products in 2018 amounting to EUR 10 million. That means that in 2018, local producers exported 59% more prosciutto than in 2017.
Kovacevic said prosciutto should be an export oriented product and that it should be used in the tourism sector as much as possible.
Th CEO of the Croatian Prosciutto Cluster, Ante Madir, said Croatian Prosciutto Days will be held on April 26 and 27, at Zagreb's International Hotel and at the main square where visitors will also be able to buy products.
Last year Croatia imported 3,848 tonnes of leg and shoulder products, worth more than EUR 21.5 million, while at the same time it exported 1,113 tonnes, worth EUR 6.5 million. Compared with 2014, exports were up 14 times in quantity and 11 times in value.
