The event was organised by the Croatian-Japanese Cultural and Economic Society in cooperation with the Japanese Embassy in Zagreb and the Croatian Olympic Committee.
When I heard that Croatia had won as many as five gold medals at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, I was very surprised with the success such a small country can make in sports. Speaking in size, this would mean that a country of the size of Japan should have won as many as 150 gold medals in Rio which, of course, is impossible. I hope the Games in Tokyo will be an opportunity for Croats to meet Japan, get interested in its culture and tradition, but that it will also be an opportunity for them to visit Japan, said Japanese Ambassador to Croatia Keiji Takiguchi, stressing that sport is a very important part of the Japanese culture.
The 2020 Summer Olympics, commonly known as Tokyo 2020, is an upcoming international multi-sport event that is scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020.
Tokyo was selected as the host city during the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires on 7 September 2013. These Games will mark the return of the Summer Olympics to Tokyo for the first time since 1964, the first city in Asia to host the Olympics twice, and the fourth Olympics overall to be held in Japan, following the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo and the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. They will be the second of three consecutive Olympic Games to be held in East Asia, following the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and preceding the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China.
