The J&K Forest Department and Forest Research Institute have launched a GIS-based QR-enabled project to protect Kashmir's iconic Chinar trees, or Booune, which have been integral to the region’s heritage for centuries. Led by the Research Forest Division in Srinagar, the initiative involves geo-tagging Chinar trees and attaching QR codes to monitor their health, age, and growth. This innovative approach helps preserve the trees from urbanization and habitat loss while educating the public about their ecological and cultural value. QR codes allow residents and visitors to learn more about the trees, encouraging community participation in their conservation. EPA/FAROOQ KHAN
