December 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, also known as the Boxing Day tsunami. The disaster struck on 26 December 2004, triggered by a 9.2 magnitude earthquake in the Indian Ocean off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. According to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), the tsunami claimed over 220,000 lives, displaced more than half a million survivors internally, and left hundreds of thousands without livelihoods, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in recent history. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, the Maldives, and Thailand sustained massive damage from the catastrophe.
