While the exact number of enslaved Africans who have passed through the island is disputed by historians, the House of Slaves and Goree Island have become the emblem of the transatlantic slave trade. The day 02 December marks International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. An estimated 50 million people are in modern slavery according to the United Nations.
