NETHERLANDS BELGIUM ROYALS NEW LOCK

Foto: OLIVIER MATTHYS

epa11654263 Coloured festive smoke billows over the New Lock (Nieuwe Sluis) during its official inauguration ceremony, in Terneuzen, Netherlands, 11 October 2024. The 'Nieuwe Sluis', measuring 427 meters long, 55 meters wide and 16.44 meters deep, is one of the largest locks in the world allowing larger seagoing vessels to sail to the port of Ghent via the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal. The New Lock was built within the existing lock complex in Terneuzen, after the 'Middensluis', in use since 1910 has been demolished to make way for the Nieuwe Sluis. Both kings will perform the official ceremony from an electric event ship Z9, which will sail towards the Nieuwe Sluis. After the opening signal, MV Bregaglia, a 240 meter-long and 38-meter wide bulk carrier, will sail out of the Nieuwe Sluis, flanked by a boat parade of commercial vessels from the region.
