CHINA PHOTO SET UNDERGROUND IDOLS

Foto: WU HAO

epa11654051 Underground idol fan Fei poses for a photo on a street, in Beijing, China, 11 January 2024 (issued 11 October 2024). Originally from Japan, the underground idol culture has gained popularity in China in recent years. It first emerged and led the trend in Asia in the 1960s and continues to influence the industry, serving as a model for some of the biggest K-pop groups today. While underground idols face lower entry barriers compared to mainstream artists, the market is growing rapidly. Most Chinese underground idols balance regular jobs while organizing their own events, driven by passion rather than seeking fame. Fei, a 21-year-old finance student in Beijing, developed a passion for Japanese anime in middle school and soon became interested in the underground idol culture after starting college in 2021. He frequently attends underground idol group performances in Beijing and Shanghai, collecting merchandise and taking group photos with his favorite idols. "I think it's the passion and positive energy from these underground idols that attracted me the most at the beginning,"he says. Fei believes that many fans support their idols because they witness their personal growth from being amateurs to becoming popular or even famous, which brings a sense of satisfaction to those who stand by them throughout their journey.
