Firefighters to get approx. EUR 1M for rewards, new equipment

ZAGREB, Sept 4 (Hina) - The Croatian Firefighting Association (HVZ) and the State Protection and Rescue Administration (DUZS) will get HRK 7.6 million from the government to reward firefighters and buy necessary equipment as a sign of gratitude for their efforts during this year's challenging wildfire season.

An HVZ delegation was informed of that on Monday by Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic at a meeting at the government which was also attended by Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic, Finance Minister Zdravko Maric and DUZS chief Dragan Lozancic.

Bozinovic said the decision to set aside HRK 7.6 million from the budget was made in line with the prime minister's announcement that firemen would be rewarded for their "hard work" during "another very tough season." He said the season was being analysed to provide conclusions on the organisation, equipping and functioning of the firefighting system.

Bozinovic said the possibility of drawing European Union funds would be considered to upgrade firefighting equipment, possibly before next summer.

He added that 65 fires had been investigated so far and that the police had arrested 28 persons in connection with them.
