Since there is insufficient interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) studies in Croatia, this autumn the ministry will allocate 3,000 STEM scholarships for the first time, Minister Blazenka Divjak told reporters on Wednesday.
As of this autumn, the ministry will also allocate 4,600 additional scholarships for students of low socioeconomic status, Divjak said, adding that about 10,000 students applied for such scholarships annually but that until now the state budget could cover only 5,600 applications.
The Science and Education Ministry therefore drew an additional HRK 270 million from European structural funds, which will make it possible to grant another 4,600 scholarships for the most vulnerable students, covering nearly all scholarship applications, Divjak said.
