The survey on online business and combating the grey economy in Croatia was conducted late 2016 on a sample of 500 respondents of all ages throughout Croatia and the results indicate that some services are exclusively paid in cash.
For examples, some respondents said that maintenance works or baby sitting services are paid only in cash. Cash is used to pay for personal services in 77% of cases, such as at the hairdresser, pedicurist, cosmetic salons and so one while 74% use cash at the vegetable market and more than half the respondents pay cash for tailor or cobbler services and the like.
About 50% of the respondents said that they paid in cash for utility services, phone, internet and TV subscription fees. At the same time, 73% said that they would like to pay for public services with credit cards or online.
Visa's CEO for Croatia, Davor Krsula said that a similar result in Romania was sufficient for the government to adopt a national strategy in 2013 to motivate payments by credit cards in the public sector. The strategy envisaged payments via credit cards or online for taxation, welfare services, official travel by state officials and so on, which could result with certain savings, he said.
