Fewer smokers among the young in Croatia, says survey

ZAGREB, May 31 (Hina) - On the occasion of World No Smoking Day, the Health Ministry presented the results of a global survey on tobacco use among the young which indicate that the number of smokers aged between 13 and 15 has halved over the past six years, however electronic cigarettes have become more popular and 10% of that age group indulge in e-cigarettes.

The survey shows that in 2016, 15% of respondents aged between 13 and 15 said that in the past 30 days they had smoked tobacco cigarettes, which is virtually half the number that said the same in 2011 (27%).

Most student smokers come from Zagreb (19%).

The survey was conducted in about 50 schools around Croatia and included 2991 students in this age group.

Of the total number of students who participated in the survey, 27% considered that smokers had more friends while 21.3% considered students who smoked to be more attractive.

Of the number of current smokers, 61.8% bought cigarettes in stores and 56.9% said that they had never been prevented from buying cigarettes in stores.

The survey was conducted in 168 countries overall and has been conducted in Croatia since 2003.

In the latest survey, respondents were questioned about the use of e-cigarettes and 10% of the respondents in Croatia said that used them.
