As a result of new directives by the European Parliament and the Council, with regard to stepping up controls by running information through relevant data bases on the external borders, the rules of the Schengen Borders Code regarding border checks have been changed.
In line with those changes, Croatia is obliged to step up checks at internal border crossings, toward Slovenia and Hungary, and on its external borders (all other border crossings), by checking all passengers crossing those borders.
Police authorities will conduct systematic checks of all passengers entering and exiting the EU through two data bases - MUP's national data base and the Interpol data base, MUP said on its web site.
MUP recalled that until now special checks were not conducted of people with the right of free movement in the EU, that is, citizens of EU member states and Schengen associated states, however, due to the latest amendments, as of Friday all passengers will be systematically checked.
MUP added that passengers may be required to wait somewhat longer at border controls.
MUP added that border police will take all the necessary steps and utilise available personnel so that the time passengers have to wait at border crossings is as short as possible, particularly during the Easter holiday season.
