3 in 5 Croats are overweight

ZAGREB, March 17 (Hina) - Obesity in the world is becoming pandemic and in Croatia as many as 60% of the population suffers from overweight, according to figures presented at a conference held on Friday, when Croatia observed its national anti-obesity day.

According to figures collected by the World Health Organisation, as many as 64% of Croatian men and 52% of women are overweight, and one in five children (19%) have those problems.

Obesity and overweight can be considered a public health hazard. Expert Zeljko Metelko said that this problem made life expectancy shorter.

Doctor Mirna Situm warned about the serious long-term complications caused by obesity such as chronic non-contagious diseases.
