Agricultural production falling, needs new wave of investments, says executive

ZAGREB, March 15 (Hina) - Croatia needs a new wave of investments in agriculture because production is constantly falling, Denis Matijevic, President of the Board of Directors of the AgroFructus fruit and vegetable group, said on Wednesday.

Matijevic told the press that Croatia could be competitive in producing certain sorts of fruit and vegetables, but it did not need to be self-sufficient with all sorts.

The executive presented the company's investment cycle over the past few years, and in that context said that the company would be investing HRK 7.5 million by the end of the year in the construction of green houses covering 3.7 hectares in which the company intends to grow capsicums and expects a yield of 900 tonnes this year.

The company has already invested in mushrooms and currently produces 400 tonnes of button mushrooms each year and next year the company plans to double that quantity.

The AgroFructus Group consists of eight companies in Croatia and abroad and the group is permanently increasing its purchases of fruit and vegetables. Currently it procures more than 120,000 tonnes and the company has a turnover of more than HRK 600 million per annum.

"We procure the majority of our fruit and vegetables in Croatia (about 70%) and only about 1% is from our own production, the rest is procured from more than 2,000 associate farmers. The remaining 30% is imported from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and Serbia," Matijevic said.
