EP committee calls for reducing gender inequality

ZAGREB, Feb 7 (Hina) - Women in the European Union on average have lower salaries and pensions, they are not equally represented in powerful positions in politics and the economy and, at the current pace, equality will be achieved only in 70 years, the European Parliament's gender equality committee says in a report adopted on Monday, asking the EU and the member states to invest more effort in reducing gender inequality.

According to the Gender Equality Index, with an overall score of 52.9 out of 100, the EU is only halfway towards equality. The women's employment rate in 2015 was 64% and was the highest to date. Although women are more educated on average, the difference in salaries in relation to men is 16.1%, while the difference in pensions is 40%.

In national parliaments, the share of women went up from 21% in 2005 to 28% in 2016 and in the EP from 30 to 37%.

In the Gender Equality Index, Croatia has a score of 39.8 out of a possible 100 points. Sweden has the best score (74.2), while Romania has the lowest (33.7). The index measures work money, knowledge, time, power and health.
