Cold snap forces more and more homeless to seek refuge - Red Cross

ZAGREB, Jan 10 (Hina) - Freezing temperatures and inclement winter conditions are the reason why a rising number of the homeless are seeking accommodation in the three shelters run by the Croatian Red Cross (HCK), the organisation reported on Tuesday.

The HCK-run centres in Zagreb, Dubrovnik and Pula have registered a rise in the number of those who are seeking shelter as the country is gripped by cold weather.

The head of the Zagreb centre, located in the Kosnica suburb, Zvonko Mlinar, said today that some of the beneficiaries had arrived on their own and some had been sent to the shelter by social welfare services.

Currently, the Kosnica shelter is caring for 102 people and its capacity is the accommodation of up to 150 homeless persons.

The HCR-run shelter in the Istrian city of Pula currently registers 10 people, and the shelter in Dubrovnik is now caring for 37 people and its capacity is 48.

The HCK says that in cooperation with 131 associations it will continue providing for the most vulnerable groups of citizens.
