Slovakia, Croatia dissatisfied with trade volume

ZAGREB, Nov 8 (Hina) - Even though in the last five years the volume of trade between Slovakia and Croatia has more than doubled, trade between the two countries, amounting to EUR 525 million in 2015, is not satisfactory, it was said at a Croatian-Slovak economic forum in Zagreb on Tuesday.

The event, organised by the Croatian Chamber of Commerce (HGK), was attended by executives of 60 Croatian and 25 Slovakian companies.

"The trade volume is not satisfactory, it can be better," HGK vice-president Zelimir Kramaric said.

He noted that in recent years the cooperation between small business owners in Croatia and Slovakia had enhanced.

Slovak Ambassador Juraj Priputen said there was great cooperation potential in the fields of energy industry, green technologies, car industry, innovation, information technology and tourism.

He called on Croatian business people to use the experience of their Slovak colleagues who had been on the European market for more than 12 years.

The secretary-general of the Slovak Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Martin Hrivik, said that the Chamber had been cooperating successfully with the HGK since 1993 while Croatian Assistant Economy and SMEs Minister Ivan Sertic said that Croatia had a deficit in the bilateral trade, which, he added, was partially compensated for with tourism.

In 2015, slightly more than 400,000 Slovaks visited Croatia and Croatia has been the most attractive destination for Slovak tourists for years.

In 2015 Croatia exported EUR 175 million worth of commodities to Slovakia while imports from that country totalled EUR 349 million.

Croatia exported to Slovakia seats, real and artificial leather products, electrical transformers and monitors and projectors and it imported phones, petroleum oils and oils from bituminous minerals, monitors and projectors, and passenger and other vehicles.

Sertic called on Slovak business people to invest in Croatia.

Commenting on Great Britain's decision to leave the EU, Slovak Assistant Economy Minister Dusan Jurik said that small European countries should stick together.

Direct Slovak investments in Croatia between 1993 and the end of the second quarter of this year totalled EUR 135.5 million, which is 0.46% of total foreign direct investments in Croatia. In the said period, Croatia invested only EUR 26.5 million in Slovakia, it was said at the forum.

The HGK and the Slovak Chamber of Commerce and Industry signed an agreement on cooperation and the HGK and the Slovak Investment and Trade Development Agency signed a memorandum of understanding at the forum.
