ZAGREB, Oct 23 (Hina) - Statistics on traffic accidents for the first nine months of 2016 were better than at the same time last year, despite several recent extremely serious crashes, Josip Mataija of the Croatian Interior Ministry Road Traffic Safety Office has said.

A total of 24,464 traffic accidents were recorded in said period, with 228 fatalities, while 2,103 persons sustained serious and 9,047 light injuries. Compared to the first nine months of 2015, the number of accidents with fatalities fell 12.3%, those resulting in injuries fell 1.8%, while those with material damage went up 2%.

About 60% of the casualties die on the spot, 8% en route to hospital and 30% within a month of an accident, according to statistics.

A total of 43,658 vehicles were involved in traffic accidents in the first nine months of 2016, of which 1,200 were unregistered. Over 600,000 drivers were fined for various violations and over 11,000 violations were made with unregistered vehicles.
