Pink Ribbon Day marked in Zagreb

ZAGREB, Oct 1 (Hina) - Pink Ribbon Day, dedicated to the prevention and early detection of breast cancer, was marked for the 17th year in Zagreb on Saturday with a procession through the city centre organised by Europa Donna, the Croatian forum against breast cancer.

A charity drive, called "Let's give a pink life", was organised as part of the event to raise funds for intraoperative radiation therapy equipment to facilitate breast cancer treatment.

"This drive has been going on for three years, but only 750,000 of the required 4.5 million kuna has been raised," Europa Donna president Vesna Ramljak said, expressing hope that it would be possible for women in Croatia to receive intraoperative radiation therapy as of next year.

About 2,500 women in Croatia develop breast cancer annually and about 1,000 die. Ramljak said that the traditional procession through the city centre was dedicated to all the women who had lost the battle with breast cancer or were currently battling this malignant disease.

"Our aim is to ensure better prevention and a better education so that cancer is detected at an early stage when it can be cured," Ramljak said.

Pink Ribbon Day is traditionally marked on the first Saturday in October, a month entirely dedicated to raising public awareness of breast cancer.
