Bosnia's FM expects EU green-light for his country in mid-September

ZAGREB, Aug 29 (Hina) - Bosnia and Herzegovina's Foreign Minister Igor Crnadak on Monday said that he expected the European Union's General Affairs Council (GAC) to launch in mid-September the procedure for granting his country's request for membership candidate, however, he also cautions that Bosnia's internal political tensions may undermine its prospects.

"There is a general assessment that in the last 15-16 months Bosnia and Herzegovina has made exceptional progress and that we have implemented a part of reforms in a satisfactory manner. However, all have a dose of caution as they are aware that things change for the better very slowly here," the minister said in an interview with the Banja Luka-based "Nezavisne Novine" daily.

Bosnia and Herzegovina submitted the request for a status of candidate country to the EU in mid-February.

A few days ago, officials of Bosnia and Herzegovina's state-level government and the governments of the two entities reached agreement on the coordination mechanism for relations with the EU. The agreement is a central component of the country’s efforts to become an EU acceding candidate. Approving the coordination mechanism is one of the main conditions the EU has set in order to consider Bosnia's application credible.
