10 Syrian refugees relocated from Greece to Croatia

ZAGREB, Aug 23 (Hina) - Croatia on Tuesday took in ten Syrian migrants from Greece in accordance with activities "to implement the European Union Council decision establishing provisional measures in the area of international protection for the benefit of Italy and of Greece."

"They are Syrian citizens who will be accommodated in the asylum centre in Zagreb and the Interior Ministry will implement procedures to approve their application for international protection," the Interior Ministry reported on its web site.

The ministry added that Croatia was continuing processing application for international protection from Greece and Italy since accepting four Eritrean citizens from Italy in July.

When the first four migrants from Italy were accommodated in the Porin asylum centre in Zagreb, Interior Minister Vlaho Orepic recalled that three years ago Croatia was accepted to the European Union and now it is in a position to help those people in distress.

He added that this was not merely a humane gesture but an obligation stemming from EU membership. "With this act, Croatia has shown that it is a responsible country and that it is executing its duties," Orepic said, adding that this was just the beginning of the process and that all state institutions will have to show responsibility.
