Sibenik receives 41.5 mln grant to reconstruct fortress

ZAGREB, July 25 (Hina) - A project to reconstruct the St. Ivan fortress above the central Adriatic town of Sibenik worth a total of HRK 49,145,000 will be co-financed with a grant of HRK 41.5 million from the European Union regional development fund, the Office of the Sibenik Mayor reported on Monday.

This is the largest grant Sibenik has ever received Mayor Zeljko Buric said in a press release, adding that the difference would be provided by the City of Sibenik. This is the first time funds have been granted from the Integrated development programme based on development of cultural heritage, the press release says.

We believed that after we reconstructed the St. Mihovil and Barone fortresses this project too would be successful in absorbing funds not just because it was prepared well but because our team has experience in submitting projects of this nature. I am proud and pleased that we are realising the dreams of our residents to reconstruct all of Sibenik's fortresses, Mayor Buric said.

The final step still needs to be made and that is for the project to be endorsed by the Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds.

This project is the continuation of reconstructing the town's fortification system and is an essential element of the local and national cultural heritage as well a cultural tourist attraction, the press release continues.

The St. Ivan fortress spans over an area of 13,000 square metres and this project envisages the reconstruction of its foundations as well as developing innovative content.

The 3D technology video mapping on the fortress' walls will feature various contents creating additional dimensions, optical illusions and the impression of static objects being mobile. The fortress will also contain an Educational Campus and smart interactive classrooms.
