President calls for parliament dissolution, early election

ZAGREB, June 17 (Hina) - Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic said on Friday that no one had managed to persuade her during consultations at her office following the ouster of the Tihomir Oreskovic cabinet that they had the necessary parliamentary majority to establish a new government, and she therefore urged the Parliament Speaker to convene a session at which the 151-seat legislature would be dissolved.

"I would like to inform the public that during the consultations no one convinced me that they enjoyed the support of 76 or more lawmakers that would make it possible for me to approve the awarding of the status of prime-minister designate," the head of state told a news conference after holding consultations with parliamentary groups at her office on Friday morning.

President Grabar-Kitarovic said that an absolute majority of lawmakers had told her that they were in favour of a snap parliamentary election.

Taking into consideration the will of most MPs as well as the attitude of the majority of citizens to have an early election, Grabar-Kitarovic called on Parliament Speaker Zeljko Reiner of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) to convene a session on the motion for the parliament's dissolution as soon as possible.

Over 80 MPs have said they are in favour of an early election.

The parliament is expected to adopt a decision on its self-dissolution on Monday, and the decision is expected to take effect in mid-July so that a snap election could be held in early September.
