Playground opened in Slavonski Brod neighbourhood with 500 Roma children

ZAGREB, June 6 (Hina) - A new playground was opened in a neighbourhood in the eastern town of Slavonski Brod where more than 500 Roma children live.

The city authorities had prepared the ground for work on the playground and UNICEF invested HRK 83,000 in equipping it.

The playground was built as part of a project designed to increase the number of Roma children attending primary schools. As of this year, the project also includes pre-school education.

Over the past two years, UNICEF invested HRK 795,000 in the project aimed at including Roma children in the education system in Slavonski Brod.

"Children from ethnic minorities living in rural areas do not have the same starting positions as other children and that is what we are trying to change," said Valentina Otmacic, head of the UNICEF office in Croatia.

The next big project in the Slavonski Brod neighbourhood is the construction of a community centre and completion of legislation of houses in the settlement, which was built on state land.

The progress that is happening is encouraging for the Roma community, said Milan Mitrovic, president of the Roma Minority Council of Slavonski Brod.
