Survey shows 51% of respondents in favour of compulsory military service

ZAGREB, April 30 (Hina) - More than a half of 680 people covered by a survey conducted by EduCentar believe that compulsory military service should be reintroduced because it is an excellent way for a person to become disciplined and develop a good work ethic, 42% are against because they believe that young people should not be forced into doing something they do not want, while 7% support the reintroduction of compulsory military service only if there is an alternative in the form of civilian service.

The respondents who support the re-introduction of compulsory military service (51%) believe than young people lack self-discipline and work ethic and that military service is a good type of education and needed by most men.

"The army is the best and strongest organisation in the world and all men aged 16-45 should have the experience of compulsory military service and acquire a rank, naturally, in line with their level of education," one of the respondents said.

Apart from acquisition of various skills, military service contributes to building unity, believe respondents who support compulsory military service.

The respondents who are against the reintroduction of compulsory military service, namely 42% of those interviewed, believe that young people should be let make their own decision concerning military service and that wars can be prevented only by ignoring everything related to the military.

"Military service is a waste of state money and time. Those who care about serving in the army will do it anyway, while others should be allowed to do what they want," one of the respondents said.

The respondents who believe that if compulsory service is reintroduced, it should have an alternative in the form of civilian service (7%), say that schools and hospitals are excellent institutions for civilian service and that assistance to elderly people is a good option too.

"Even though they are against military service, some people support it if it entails a possibility of finding a job after its completion," one of those respondents said.

Another respondent said that no one should have the right to impose on anyone else, by law or an act of force, the place, time and way of thinking. "Military service should be strictly one's own choice," the respondent said.
