Minister promises 100 mln kuna more for dairy sector in 2016

ZAGREB, April 18, (Hina) - Agriculture Minister Davor Romic has promised a hundred million kuna more for the dairy sector this year than in 2015, explaining that the authorities "have recognised the problems of the dairy sector and more funds will be awarded to it this year from the state budget".

During his visit to Bjelovar County, where he met with cattle breeders and dairy farms' owners, Minister Romic was informed about the accumulated problems and "an alarming situation" as a Croatian dairy farm owner loses 700 kuna per cattle head and one kuna per litre of milk every day.

Farmers warned the minister that those were the reasons why many farm owners were going under and closing their businesses.

Dairy farms' owners ascribed those developments to rising milk imports and unfair commercial practices, which is why they urge the government to help stabilise the milk market.

Romic responded that "some steps have already been taken to alleviate the difficult situation".

In this context, he mentioned grants and measures aimed at encouraging young farmers.

We also should adopt legislation against unfair commercial practices. "The law will be prepared before (parliament's) summer recess and then we will launch the procedure," the minister promised at the talks with farmers.

The participants in the talks presented a score of measures for the revitalisation of cattle breeding in Bjelovar.
