Croatian president greets Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall

ZAGREB, March 14 (Hina) - British Crown Prince Charles and his wife Camilla began their two-day visit to Croatia on Monday by meeting their hosts, President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic and her husband Jakov, in the President's Office in Zagreb.

After the playing of the national anthems and inspection of a guard of honour, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall had a photo opportunity with their hosts and then began talks. At the start of the meeting it was said that a new British ambassador could arrive in Croatia in July, until which time the United Kingdom would be represented in Zagreb by Charge d'Affaires Ian Cliff.

Although an exchange of gifts has been planned for the start of the meeting, that will happen during a formal dinner in the evening. It has been learnt that the Prince and the Duchess will be presented with a painting by Matko Trebotic and a bottle of vintage wine from Ilok, eastern Croatia.

Since the Prince and the Duchess are not political representatives of the United Kingdom, the topics of the talks in the President's Office will not be current political issues, but those in the focus of their interest.

The Prince has for years been a strong supporter of inter-religious dialogue and greater understanding between religions and has been advocating youth education, sustainable development, environmental protection and responsible business.

The Duchess is known for her efforts to raise public awareness of sexual violence, for supporting rape victims, promoting literacy and raising awareness of osteoporosis.

They both support local food production and promote healthy diets. Prince Charles is patron or president of 420 charity organisations and foundations, and Duchess Camilla is patron or president of about 20 such organisations.

Announcing their visit to Croatia, British Charge d'Affaires Ian Cliff said that it was an important visit aimed at strengthening relations between Croatia and Great Britain, not just political relations, but also relations between people.

After a sight-seeing tour in the afternoon, Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla will return to the President's Office in the evening for a dinner, to which 68 guests, including political leaders, religious dignitaries, business people and prominent public figures, have been invited.
