Zagreb joins European March for Refugee Rights

ZAGREB, Feb 27 (Hina) - Zagreb joined in the European March for Refugee Rights which took place in over 20 European countries, the US, Canada and Israel on Saturday, with Zagreb's residents sending out the message that they were knocking on Europe's door and seeking that it define policies to solve the refugee problem.
The march was held under the slogan "Safe Passage Now". Fifty activists, joined by residents, demanded that governments and institutions all over Europe ensure legal routes for those who had to flee their countries because of war, conflict, violence or poverty.

They carried banners which said "Safe passage for refugees", "Every man has the right to a dignified life", "Without borders, without violence, ONLY PEOPLE" and "The people of Europe rise up against capitalism".

Responding to questions from the press, the activists said the measures being taken to reduce the flow of refugees to the European Union would only favour organised crime.

"We seek a just and equitable reception of refugees in Europe, respect for conventions and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other treaties which guarantee the right to free movement and security and reception of people," said Lana Bobic, one of the organisers of the Zagreb march.

She said Croatia was organised when it came to volunteer work. "We've sent aid outside Croatia too and connected with other organisations which work for the overall well-being of refugees and protect their rights."
