CroMilk association: High imports detrimental for Croatian dairies

ZAGREB, Feb 23 (Hina) - The CroMilk association of Croatian dairies and wholesale buyers of milk has warned that chains of shops and large retailers import high quantities of milk and cheese, posing a threat to the Croatian dairy industry.

The association warned in a press release on Tuesday that after Croatia joined the European Union in mid-2013, large retailers started importing milk products at dumping prices, and the situation for local dairies was additionally aggravated by a Russian embargo and the lifting of milk quotas inside the EU.

Every second milk product on the shelves of stores in Croatia is now an imported product, while five years ago it was one in five, according to the press release that points out to the fact that the imported products are being offered at dumping prices.

CroMilk recalls that 97% of fresh milk produced in Croatia meets the highest EU standards, while products coming to Croatia from the EU are not subject to controls and inspections.
