Croatia joins in observing World Cancer Day

ZAGREB, Feb 3 (Hina) - "We Can. I Can" is the slogan of World Cancer Day 2016, observed on 4 February, and the goal of marking this day is to raise cancer awareness and encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment.

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Croatia, with every fourth Croatian resident dying of cancer. According to the national cancer registry kept by the Croatian Public Health Agency, in 2013, 13,788 Croatians died of cancer in 2013, and of them 7,888 were men and 5,900 women.

The head of the Croatian League Against Cancer, Damir Eljuga, said on Wednesday that in 2014 there were an estimated 25,000 patients suffering from this disease in the country.

Croatia is among European countries with a medium-level occurrence of cancer, according to Eljuga.

World Cancer Day was founded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration, written in 2008. The primary goal of the World Cancer Day is to significantly reduce illness and death caused by cancer by 2020.

Currently, 8.2 million people die from cancer worldwide every year, of whom 4 million people die prematurely (aged 30 to 69 years), according to the website of the World Cancer Day.

The Croatian League Against Cancer will have "Opens Door Day" tomorrow.
