86,000 Croats suffer from dementia, most hit by Alzheimer's

ZAGREB, Dec 7 (Hina) - Some 86,000 people in Croatia suffer from dementia, and 90% of them live with their families who care for them, however appropriate social support is lacking, it was said at the beginning of a two-day conference on Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Zagreb on Monday.
The conference, which brought together some 200 experts, pointed out that every year some new 3,000 patients are diagnosed with dementia in Croatia, and Alzheimer's accounts for 70% of dementia cases.

Some 250,000 families care for these patients and they need more efficient support from society.

The head of the Croatian Alzheimer's Association, Ninoslav Mimica, said that Croatia had recently ensured the first 13 beds for patients suffering from this chronic neurodegenerative disease in the Medvescak old people's home in Zagreb.
