NGOs: Disabled not among priorities of political parties

ZAGREB, Nov 6 (Hina) - Thirty-two associations of disabled people have asked politicians to say how they will improve the status of disabled people, saying that "inclusion begins with intention, but political parties haven't shown it yet."
The organisations asked 22 political parties and independent candidates running in Sunday's parliamentary election to state their position on three main issues the removal of which would considerably improve the the position of people with disabilities. They concern transport, inclusive education and expansion of the network of social services.

Only the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Croatian Dawn and the Smart party responded to their queries.

Although half a million people in Croatia are disabled and 465,000 of them are eligible to vote, the people with disabilities are not among the priorities of the political parties, the associations said. The NGOs expect the authorities to show understanding for the specific problems of people with disabilities and to address them by implementing specific activities and measures.
