"The question of whether the production will return to Croatia in the future will be decided once additional seasons are officially set by HBO. At that time, the production, along with HBO, will assess their location needs based on the scripts and storylines. HBO remains grateful to the HAVC (Croatian Audio-visual Centre) and the Croatian crew for all of their continued support," HBO said in a press release.
The city of Dubrovnik has stood in for King's Landing since season 2. According to some media, filming will continue in Girona, Spain.
HAVC director Hrvoje Hribar was not available for comment and the Dubrovnik Tourist Board has said that they regret that the series will not be in Dubrovnik as it contributed to the town's popularity.
Dubrovnik Mayor Andro Vlahusic said on Friday he was sorry the series would not be filmed in Dubrovnik.
He said HBO had shown a high level of professionalism and that if they ever decided to return Dubrovnik, the town would offer the same terms and support as it had until now.
"At the moment we don't have any official news with regard to the filming of the sixth season. The City of Dubrovnik is grateful to HBO for all it has done for Dubrovnik and Croatia through its engagement of extras, production, financing, which has brought direct and indirect promotion," Vlahusic said, adding that "We look forward to any potential cooperation."
