According to the ministry's preliminary data, there will be a total of 41,878 first graders this autumn, which is a mild rise from the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school years when there were 40,777 and 41,326 first-graders respectively.
Broken down by region, the City of Zagreb has the highest number of pupils enrolled in first grade, 8,106. It is followed by Split-Dalmatia County (4,678), and Zagreb County (3310).
The lowest number of first -graders will be in the central mountainous region of Lika, 392.
