UK not scrapping Srebrenica resolution despite Russian opposition

SARAJEVO, July 1 (Hina) - Great Britain will not scrap a draft resolution on Srebrenica despite Russia's opposition to its contents and the UN Security Council will discuss it on July 7, British Ambassador to the UN Matthew Rycroft said in Wednesday's issue of Sarajevo's Dnevni Avaz daily.

The draft clearly defines the crimes committed in Srebrenica, east Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1995 as genocide against Bosniaks and calls for honouring the victims and permanently acknowledging irrefutable historical facts so that such a crime is never committed again.

The resolution should encourage further steps towards reconciliation in BiH and it will affirm our determination to prevent genocides, crimes against humanity and war crimes, said Rycroft, who served as the British ambassador in Sarajevo.

All major Western countries support the draft resolution and Great Britain believes this will be enough for a sufficient number of votes at the Security Council.

Serbia and BiH's Serb entity are strongly against the draft resolution, saying it ignores Serb victims and that it will not contribute to reconciliation. Owing in part to insisting from Serbia and the entity, Russia has submitted its own draft resolution which does not mention the genocide in Srebrenica, talks about war crimes in BiH generally, and calls for honouring all victims.
